Obituary for Sammie "Buddy" Bens

Sammie "Buddy" Bens
Sammie L. Bens was born February 20, 1941, in Randolph County, Coleman, GA. He transitioned to be with both his mother, Ms. Savannah Chambliss, and father, Clifton Bens on April 22, 2018. Sammie graduated from Carver High School in 1958, in Dawson, Georgia. Shortly after graduation he was employed by the City of Dawson, earning on the job training skills. Sammie gave his life to Christ at a very young age.

“Buddy”, as he was affectionately known as, enjoyed cooking, and listening to the blues; one of his favorite artists was B. B. King. Sammie enjoyed life to the fullest. He was a man that was very fond of washing and keeping his car clean, dancing, and drinking his favorite taste of spirits. Sammie was also a huge fan of WWE professional wrestling.

Sammie was also known as “Clyde” to his “Bonnie”, Mrs. Mattie Bens; whom he has joined her in heaven. He was a very good caretaker on every measure he was needed, including the role of being a responsible big brother to his sister Sherline Chambliss. His height might have measured short by many, but he carried the voice of a giant, one in which he never missed a step or beat.

On, December 19, 1969 he married the late Mattie Bens, in Fort Lauderdale, FL and later moved to Atlanta, GA in 1985. They were married for well over 44 years until her passing on July 2, 2014. Sammie was never shy when it came to family time and the love he had for Christ. It was nothing for him to sing and talk about the goodness of God and how he became a changed man. He frequently visited Little Rock Baptist Church, where the pastor was Dr. R. J. Johnson.
Sammie was preceded in death by his wife, the late Mrs. Mattie Bens; daughter, the late Dianne Brown; son, the late Sammie L. Chambliss Jr.; and their mother, the late Marjorie (Mammie) Chambliss.

He leaves to cherish the many wonderful memories of his life, daughters, Linda Gunn (Stone Mountain, GA), and Anita Chambliss (Stone Mountain, GA); step-son, Mr. Willie (Cookie) Simpson; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Sammie has a wonderful beloved Bens Family in Florida. One of just many siblings, sister, Sherline Chambliss (Shirley) who was very well known for her affection and love she expressed towards her brother; great-niece Mrs. Dorothy Jackson “Dot”, of whom he never sought short to contact if there were anything that was asked upon, along with her daughter “ Shay”.
For the life Sammie lived will always be in our memory,
because he enjoyed life and all that’s within.

Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, April 28th, 2018, 1:00 pm, at Herschel Thornton Mortuary 3346 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SW Atlanta, Georgia 30331.

Public Viewing will be Friday, April 27th, 2018 10:00 am until 8:00 pm at Herschel Thornton Mortuary 3346 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SW Atlanta, Georgia 30331.
